What a class! Last night we wrapped up our 6 weeks by doing a circuit of some of the exercises we have practised over the course and the finished on a very chilled Relaxation Protocol!

Summertime is well and truly here today and tomorrow, and whilst we may love being out in the sunshine moving around, this is not always the case for our dogs!

Please use caution when exercising your dogs this week. A few tips are:
🐾 Walk in the early morning or late evening when the temperature is below 25°
🐾 Allow your dog a slow short walk to enjoy scents at their leisure...no need to rush anywhere in this heat
🐾 Carry water with you for you and them!
🐾 Walk in shady spots so they are not in direct sunlight
🐾 On your return home, ensure they have a lovely spot to rest in which is cool with plenty of access to fresh water
🐾 KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE

🦮 Walks - we all know dogs shouldn’t be walked in the heat of the day under the blazing sun. When walking ensure you’re in shady areas with access to water so they can cool off, and walk early or late in the day. Don’t be afraid to give your dog a day off from walks if they need it!

Should I give treats for good behaviour when not in response to a cue? Yes yes yes!! My top 3 behaviours to always reward are:

👀 Eye contact/checking in - this is always a great thing to capture as it means your dog is ready and listening to you for what is happening next!

🐾 recall - wanting to be near you is such a good thing, especially when you’re out and about and a little treat reconfirms that all the good stuff comes when they’re hanging out with you!

🐶 sit or down and wait - this is a great one to practise when you’re picking up after your dog! It’s fab for impulse control and means they’re safe and waiting for you to carry on with their adventures.

I've been on a little road trip with my Grandad to take him back home after his holiday celebrating his 98th Birthday in Spain. Im currently enjoying the view with an ice cream before the journey back to Thaxted.

Lots of sun and chilled doggos here today enjoying the beach.

Looking for some fun activities to do for your dog or puppy at home? These quick games are easy ways to stimulate those lovely little dog brains and noses 🐾

1. The Treat Hunt - hide some super yummy treats in a bunched up blanket or in the grass, on your cue of ‘find it’, let them sniff away and find the goodies.

2. What’s the time Mr Wolf? Ask your dog to sit and wait, slowly turn around on the spot - if they waited loads of treats and fuss! Slowly increase the distance and then repeat, repeat, repeat.

3. Chase it. Have a piece of food in your left hand and throw it to the right hand side of you. When your dog has got it, have a piece ready in your right hand to throw it to the left hand side of you. As your dog has finished the first piece and looks to you, say ‘here’ and throw the treat you have ready. Your dog will run around from side to side in front of you chasing treats having a great time! It’s also fab when doing a recall!

1. The Treat Hunt - hide some super yummy treats in a bunched up blanket or in the grass, on your cue of ‘find it’, let them sniff away and find the goodies.

2. What’s the time Mr Wolf? Ask your dog to sit and wait, slowly turn around on the spot - if they waited loads of treats and fuss! Slowly increase the distance and then repeat, repeat, repeat.

3. Chase it. Have a piece of food in your left hand and throw it to the right hand side of you. When your dog has got it, have a piece ready in your right hand to throw it to the left hand side of you. As your dog has finished the first piece and looks to you, say ‘here’ and throw the treat you have ready. Your dog will run around from side to side in front of you chasing treats having a great time! It’s also fab when doing a recall!

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Yes!! 🤩 Elsie is nearly 8 years young and showing us here that even in her older years she can learn the skill of off lead close walking, and stop and wait.

I strongly believe training is not just for puppies and dogs of all ages can benefit and learn. It also creates bonding and stimulates their lovely little brains and noses 🐕
